As the hidden infrastructure of a city, underground utility networks are enclosed, dimly lit, and characterized by high humidity and frequent fog. Within these networks, pipe wall corrosion, cracks, and sediment buildup—hidden ailments—lie concealed beneath the ground. Due to the confined and restricted nature of these spaces, manual inspection work carried out by humans poses significant risks and carries a high probability of missed defects. As a result, pipeline inspection robots have become the core tool for identifying and addressing network defects. The visual chain—including image acquisition, signal scheduling, and long-distance transmission—directly determines the effectiveness of inspection data. The CM8205 mini zoom lens module from Kaimorui, paired with the CM2001S encoding control board, forms a complete visual hardware solution that specifically addresses industry pain points such as low-light imaging in underground pipelines, cumbersome protocol adaptation, and severe signal attenuation over long distances. This solution provides a reliable visual foundation for municipal pipeline inspections and industrial cavity inspections.

1. Starlight-level imaging output, suitable for complex and dim pipeline conditions.
Underground pipelines are dark, enclosed environments where standing water causes reflections, moisture leads to fogging, and mechanical vibrations can severely challenge image acquisition. The CM8205 is equipped with a 1/2.86-inch CMOS sensor that delivers 2.1 million effective pixels for 1080P high-definition video. Its minimum illumination level reaches as low as 0.005 Lux, ensuring clear, low-noise images even when lighting inside the pipeline is limited. With a 5x optical zoom combined with a 12x digital zoom, the total magnification reaches 60x, enabling wide-angle scanning of the entire pipe wall and long-distance focusing for detailed inspection of minor rust and cracks—eliminating the need for frequent adjustments to the robot’s position. Advanced features such as wide dynamic range, strong light suppression, DIS digital image stabilization, anti-fogging, and 3DNR noise reduction effectively counteract image degradation caused by reflections from standing water, moisture-induced fogging, and vibrations from crawling movements. The entire device measures just 60×38×38mm and weighs only 45g.10A wide temperature range from ℃ to 50℃; its compact body can be integrated into small- and medium-sized pipeline robots and is compatible with carriers of various pipe diameters.
2. Intelligent recognition and scheduling to simplify the integration and debugging of the entire robot system.
High-quality imaging performance requires a stable control hub to facilitate seamless command interaction. The CM2001S encoding control board features a 6-layer gold-plated PCB designed for military-grade applications, offering exceptional anti-interference capabilities and making it well-suited for complex underground electromagnetic environments. The board connects directly to the CM8205 mechanism via LVDS, enabling automatic recognition and configuration of the camera’s image output—no complicated parameter settings are required to achieve image transmission. The hardware is equipped with dual RS485 and RS232 interfaces.TTL and IO ports, along with physical function buttons, are compatible with PELCO.P/D, SONYVISCA is a mainstream industrial protocol offering multiple baud rate options. It features power-loss memory and command-pass-through functionality. After an unexpected power outage and subsequent restart during robotic inspections, zoom and focus parameters are automatically restored, allowing the inspection task to resume seamlessly without requiring repeated back-and-forth detection, thereby significantly improving on-site operational efficiency. The board dimensions are 50×50 mm, with positioning holes measuring 45×45 mm, making it easy to install inside the robot’s compact cabin.
3. Multi-channel video output ensures lossless transmission of dragged cables over long distances.
The pipeline robot relies on cable towing to perform in-depth underground inspections. However, long-distance signal transmission is prone to significant signal attenuation, which can cause image distortion at the ground end and directly interfere with maintenance personnel’s ability to accurately assess defects. The CM8205 natively supports multi-channel video outputs including LVDS, SDI, and CVBS. The CM2001S receiver chip receives raw LVDS images and converts them into high-definition SDI signals. SDI boasts strong anti-interference capabilities, ensuring low image loss even over long cable distances, thereby preserving all fine details of pipe wall defects. The resulting video footage can be directly used as archival material for defect documentation and as evidence for project acceptance. Meanwhile, the module is also compatible with CVBS analog signals, enabling seamless integration with older debugging terminals and ensuring compatibility between new and legacy equipment. The entire module operates on a 12VDC power supply, with controllable power consumption that reduces the load on the robot’s onboard power system and extends the duration of each inspection mission.
4. A highly compatible modular solution that lowers the barrier to iteration for specialized equipment.
For pipeline robot equipment manufacturers, hardware compatibility and integration costs are key factors in product iteration. The CM8205 is deeply compatible with the CM2001S, and the board card also supports SONY FCB series cameras as well as domestically produced camera modules that comply with the VISCA protocol, offering greater flexibility in hardware selection. The entire solution packages image acquisition, signal conversion, and protocol scheduling into mature, modular units, enabling manufacturers to avoid investing significant resources in low-level driver development, thereby shortening the overall R&D cycle and reducing the cost of software and hardware integration and debugging. This solution supports OEM/ODM customization and can be applied across a variety of inspection scenarios, including municipal stormwater and sewage networks, chemical pipelines, and enclosed box culverts. In the context of the digital transformation of pipeline operations and maintenance, this comprehensive visual solution empowers pipeline robots to see clearly, control steadily, and transmit data over long distances, thus establishing a robust technological barrier for the safety of urban underground pipelines.
