A longer focal length isn't always better—clarity and field of view must be considered together.

Focal length isn't synonymous with "how powerful a lens is"; rather, it's more like a trade-off switch: Do you want to see things larger, or do you want to capture a wider field of view? Many people focus solely on the focal length number, forgetting that in real-world situations, they also need to take into account working distance, target size, and installation space.

Focal length determines how much you can see.

As the focal length increases, the subject is magnified more prominently, but the field of view also narrows. Conversely, as the focal length decreases, the field of view widens, yet the subject appears smaller. It’s not merely a “sharpness parameter”—rather, it directly influences the composition and the visible scope of the image.

Cannot be separated from the working distance.

With the same focal length, performance varies dramatically depending on the installation distance. If the target is too far away, you’ll lose fine details; if it’s too close, your field of view might be insufficient. When choosing a lens, don’t just focus on the focal length—also consider how far you’re allowed to stand from the subject and what area you need to cover.

The selection approach needs to be reversed.

First, determine how much of the frame the target should occupy. Next, consider how close you can stand within the available installation space. Only then should you choose the focal length. Lenses selected in this way tend to be more practical than those chosen solely for their “long focal lengths.” After all, what really matters isn’t the focal length itself—it’s whether you can stably and clearly see the target.

What’s most worrisome about choosing a focal length is that people tend to focus solely on whether they can “magnify the target,” without considering whether the “scene can still accommodate the context surrounding the target.” Once your field of view becomes too narrow, even if the target appears larger, you’ll end up cropping out crucial information about its location and its relationship to the environment.

So when choosing a focal length, it’s best to first clearly think about how far the subject is from the lens, how large you want the subject to appear in the frame, and whether you need to leave any surrounding context visible. Once you’ve clarified these three points, the choice of focal length will naturally move beyond being just a single number and become a truly practical and actionable decision.

Answer three questions before selecting the focal length.

  1. How much of the frame should the subject occupy?

  2. How far away can the lens be from the target?

  3. Do we still need to keep the context next to it?

If these three questions aren't answered clearly, the focal length is just a number. When it comes to actual implementation, what you choose isn't a "larger" parameter—it's a solution that can reliably and stably frame your subject within the shot.

A longer focal length doesn't necessarily mean less hassle on site. While you may be able to see a larger image, you could also end up cropping out surrounding information. Usability doesn't stem from the size of the parameters; rather, it comes from how well the tool matches the task at hand.
