Urban underground utility tunnels house critical infrastructure such as power, telecommunications, and water supply and drainage lines. With their confined spaces, humid environments, and narrow, elongated layouts, these tunnels pose significant challenges for manual inspection—high risks, numerous blind spots, and data delays—making effective operation and maintenance particularly difficult. As the core inspection platform for underground tunnels, rail mounted inspection robots must operate reliably under conditions of continuous motion, vibration, and limited signal range, relying on the coordinated support of two key components: imaging acquisition and power supply control. The Kaimorui KC9225M-K smart module, paired with the HK-100E network control board, is custom designed for rail mounted tunnel inspection applications. By delivering stable visual data capture and a robust power supply and protection solution, it provides a highly adaptable, highly reliable hardware suite that enables autonomous, unmanned inspections in underground utility tunnels.

1. Ultra-clear imaging with 25x optical zoom, tailored to meet the needs of long-range corridor surveillance.

The KC9225M-K is a 2 megapixel all in one smart camera module, equipped with 25× optical zoom, perfectly suited to the narrow, long depth observation requirements of utility tunnels. Inside these tunnels, pipelines are densely arranged, and instruments, valves, fittings, and leakage points are scattered along dozens of meters of track. Close range capture must clearly resolve instrument readings and bolt corrosion, while distant targets require precise localization of anomalies at the far end of the tunnel. The 25× optical zoom enables lossless close up imaging, and the 2 megapixel HD resolution ensures rich image detail, avoiding the blur and distortion that often accompany digital magnification. The module’s design fully accounts for the continuous mobile inspection mode of rail mounted robots. Even as the robot travels at a steady speed along the track and encounters vibrations at joint seams, it consistently delivers a stable, clear video stream—without frame blur or dropped frames caused by brief shocks—ensuring uninterrupted, traceable inspection footage and providing reliable raw video data for backend storage and remote review.

II. Empowered by AI driven intelligent recognition, robots deliver autonomous early warning and patrol inspections.

Unlike conventional surveillance camera modules that merely capture video, the KC9225M-K integrates AI powered intelligent recognition capabilities, upgrading “passive recording” to “proactive analysis”—a key enabler for unattended operation of rail mounted inspection robots. Traditional inspection approaches require maintenance personnel to manually review vast volumes of footage, resulting in low efficiency and a high risk of overlooking potential hazards. With this module onboard, the robot can autonomously detect common risks during its rail based patrols, including water accumulation in utility tunnels, pipeline leaks, instrument readings exceeding set thresholds, foreign object intrusion, and cover plate displacement.  Its low power design also aligns with the long term online requirements of tunnel infrastructure equipment. Given the complex power distribution layout within utility tunnels and the need for continuous, round the clock patrols, the KC9225M-K’s energy efficient architecture reduces overall system load and heat generation, making it well suited to the limited heat dissipation conditions of underground, enclosed spaces. Even under prolonged, uninterrupted operation, performance remains stable, supporting the robot’s ability to carry out routine, all weather inspections.

III. The HK-100E control board supports long distance PoE power delivery, addressing the challenges of corridor cabling.

Long-distance power transmission is an unavoidable challenge when deploying rail mounted inspection robots in utility tunnels. Tunnel tracks often span hundreds of meters, and laying separate high voltage power lines is costly and difficult to install; moreover, in humid environments, the risk of short circuits and overloads is particularly pronounced. The HK-100E network control board supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), enabling a single Ethernet cable to carry both data signals and electrical power. This simplifies the robot’s internal wiring, reduces the number of cables, and lowers installation and subsequent maintenance costs within the tunnel.  By integrating signal and power delivery into one cable, this solution is well suited to the needs of rail mounted robots traveling along long tracks. Cables that slide alongside the robot no longer require separate power and data lines, resulting in a more streamlined overall design, fewer instances of cable entanglement and wear related failures, and greater compatibility with the narrow, elongated layouts typical of utility tunnels—thus greatly facilitating the deployment of the entire inspection system.

IV. Fourfold Protection Mechanism: Rigorous Assurance of Stability in Underground Conditions

The underground utility tunnel experiences significant fluctuations in temperature and humidity, while moisture, dust, and transient voltage spikes constantly threaten the safety of circuit boards. The HK-100E features built-in multi layer electrical protection: overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, open circuit feedback protection, and overtemperature protection—fourfold safeguards that comprehensively withstand abnormal operating conditions. When the circuit is subjected to current overload, sudden voltage surges, open circuit faults, or when the board’s operating temperature exceeds its rated limit for extended periods, the control board promptly activates protective measures, disconnecting the faulty path and preventing breakdowns and damage to critical components such as the drive unit and the robot’s main controller. This robust protection system addresses the instability inherent in complex underground electrical environments, significantly reducing equipment repair rates, minimizing the frequency of tunnel shutdowns for maintenance, ensuring the long term stable operation of the rail mounted inspection robot, and lowering urban infrastructure maintenance costs.
